An overview of Anchoring Solutions and Smart Installation Methods for Offshore Floating Wind

The Offshore Wind Industry is evolving with increasing speed. As such, Offshore Wind is playing a major role in achieving targeted numbers of generated electricity from renewable energies. To achieve these goals, Offshore Wind turbines will need to move to deeper waters as there are limited leasing areas in suitable shallow water regions. In the US, development of Offshore Wind off the west coast, Hawaii and further offshore from the northeast, requires floating structures since fixed bottom foundations are not commercially feasible in deep water. To this end, developers are looking at floating wind solutions.
The poster focuses on one of the main cost drivers of floating wind turbines, which is the type and installation of the mooring system; namely anchoring and subsequent mooring line components. The different developments and locations of floating offshore wind structures allow for a variety of anchoring solutions. Experience from oil and gas installations as well as fixed foundations for Offshore Wind can be used to help identify available anchoring options and costs. This experience combined with innovative approaches will be used to analyze potential cost savings.
Selecting the best anchoring solution depends upon several variables, including the floating structure (spar, semisubmersible, etc.), mooring system requirements (taut, semi-taut, catenary), site-specific geotechnical data, installability, and cost efficiency. The paper shall compare the different anchor solutions, costs for fabrication, traditional installation and innovative installation solutions for systems inspired by experience from the O&G Industry. While cost advantages are expected when transitioning from single units to arrays or farms, with regards to fabrication and installation, there are benefits to the renewable industry if new lower cost anchoring solutions, specifically to wind energy, became available.
